Marlins Have Talked Contract Extension With Starling Marte
3 years agoMiami Marlins general manager Kim Ng said that the team has talked to outfielder Starling Marte about a contract extension, but it's unclear how much progress the two sides have made. Marte is scheduled to become a free agent after this season, and he's hitting a strong .288/.396/.464 with six home runs, 34 runs scored, 18 RBI and 12 stolen bases in 153 at-bats in 2021. The 32-year-old has bumped his walk rate up to a career-high 13.2 percent this season, mainly because he's swinging less often at pitches outside of the strike zone. The only thing that could give the Marlins some pause on a long-term extension is the fact that Marte turns 33 years old in October. If the two sides don't make progress on an extension in the coming weeks, he'll be a prime candidate to be traded at the deadline.
