Marlins Exercise Starling Marte's Option
4 years agoThe Miami Marlins exercised the club option for outfielder Starling Marte on Wednesday, and he'll make $12.5 million next year. The Marlins would've been on the hook for $1 million if they had decided not to pick up Marte's option. Miami acquired the center fielder from Arizona on Aug. 31 for pitchers Caleb Smith and Humberto Mejia. The 32-year-old played in 61 games during the shortened season, 33 with the D-Backs and 28 for the Fish. He slashed .281/.340/.430 with six home runs, 27 RBI and 10 steals overall, hitting .245/.286/.415 with four dingers and 13 RBI with Miami. Marte suffered a non-displaced fracture of his left pinkie finger in Game 1 of the wild-card series against Chicago and didn't return in the playoffs.
