Manny Machado Sees Pinch-Hit Appearance Thursday
6 months agoSan Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado (hip) injured his hip trying to beat out a double-play ground ball in Wednesday's loss to the Los Angeles Angels and wasn't in the starting lineup for the series opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday. However, despite dealing with a strained right hip flexor, Machado served as a pinch-hitter in the 4-3 loss on Thursday and grounded out to the pitcher in the eighth inning. It remains to be seen if the All-Star third baseman will be back in the lineup for the second game of a four-game set against Arizona on Friday, but his pinch-hit appearance is a good sign that he'll avoid a stint on the injured list. The 31-year-old veteran probably hasn't been fully healthy all year after having offseason elbow surgery, but he has picked it up of late, going 16-for-48 (.333) with a homer and seven RBI in 15 games since May 22.
