Madison Bumgarner Close to Signing with Diamondbacks
5 years agoFree agent starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner is close to signing a five-year deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks according to ESPN writer Jeff Passan. Bumgarner has struggled with some injuries over the last few years, but this year saw him throw 200 innings for the first time since 2016. He finished the 2019 season with a 9-9 record, a 3.90 ERA and an 8.8 K/9 — his highest K/9 since 2016. Joining the Diamondbacks will likely have a slight negative impact on his 2020 value, as Bumgarner has pitched better at home — 2.72 ERA, 1.052 WHIP — than on the road — 3.53 ERA, 1.169 WHIP — throughout his career. That being said, Bumgarner has pitched well at Chase Field to the tune of a 3.13 ERA and 1.161 WHIP over 19 career starts. Bumgarner is currently at 135 in our mixed rankings, and this signing with Arizona should keep him at about the same value.
