Kyle Barraclough Losing Grip On Closer's Role
6 years agoMiami Marlins closer Kyle Barraclough lasted just one-third of an inning in a save situation against the Cardinals on Monday, giving up two hits, two walks and one earned run before reliever Javy Guerra was brought in to put out the fire with the bases loaded. Manager Don Mattingly said he wouldn't make any immediate changes in the closer's role after the game, but he also didn't give Barraclough a vote of confidence moving forward. Barraclough allowed just one run in 11 2/3 innings in May and was 7-for-7 in save chances in June. However, he was 2-for-5 in save chances in July and gave up nine earned runs in 9 2/3 frames. Before Monday, Barraclough blew three consecutive saves. Poor control has been his biggest issue, as 13 of his 21 pitches on Monday were balls. If you own Barraclough, you should be very concerned. Not only should you bench him for now, but you should also think about picking up Drew Steckenrider, who is likely next in line for saves should Mattingly make a change.
