Jose Alvarado Signs Three-Year Extension
2 years agoThe Philadelphia Phillies signed relief pitcher Jose Alvarado to a three-year contract extension on Friday that includes a team option for the 2026 season. The deal will be worth $21.5 million, and the option is worth $9 million. The 27-year-old left-hander had already avoided arbitration with a one-year, $3.45 million deal last week, but now he's locked in for longer. He was strong in his second season in Philadelphia in 2022, posting a 3.18 ERA (1.92 FIP), 1.22 WHIP, two saves and a career-high 81 strikeouts in 51 relief innings. Alvarado should continue to be a valuable high-leverage late-inning reliever for the Phillies and should be valuable in holds leagues, but he's unlikely to see many save opportunities in a stacked bullpen that also includes Seranthony Dominguez, Craig Kimbrel and Gregory Soto.
