Jose Alvarado Scheduled To Make Spring Debut Wednesday
5 years agoTampa Bay Rays relief pitcher Jose Alvarado (elbow) threw a successful live batting practice session on Sunday and used around 20 pitches. He's tentatively scheduled to make his spring debut in the Grapefruit League on Wednesday against the Twins. The southpaw reliever's 2019 season ended in August, but barring any setbacks in spring training, he should be fine for Opening Day. The 24-year-old Venezuelan had seven saves for Tampa last year to go along with a 4.80 ERA, 1.87 WHIP and 39 strikeouts in his 30 innings pitched. He's struck out over 11 hitters per nine innings the last two years, but he can be wild (8.1 BB/9 in 2019). Alvarado will fight for save chances with Nick Anderson and Diego Castillo. The uncertainty in the ninth inning makes him more of a speculative saves target in deep mixed and AL-only leagues for now.
