Joey Lucchesi's Starting Hopes Taking A Hit
5 years agoSan Diego Padres pitcher Joey Lucchesi has seen his starting hopes dim as spring training progresses. The 26-year-old has only lasted 4 2/3 innings combined in three starts with a poor 11.57 ERA output. Entering camp as the projected fifth starter, Lucchesi is locked in a battle with teammate Cal Quantrill, who has impressed with a 1.29 ERA. Lucchesi’s been reliable since his debut in 2018, owning a 4.14 ERA (4.24 FIP), 1.25 WHIP and 25 percent strikeout clip in 293 2/3 career innings. But with an improved rotation in 2020, Joey Fuego will need to earn the gig. It’s probable both Lucchesi and Quantrill receive starts this year, but with a 400 ADP difference, the latter holds better value. At his 228 ADP and with a decent track record, Lucchesi certainly works as a fantasy spot starter.
