Joe Biagini Serving As Closer With Ken Giles Out
5 years agoThe Toronto Blue Jays placed closer Ken Giles (elbow) on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday with right elbow inflammation. Right-hander Joe Biagini will serve as the closer in Giles' absence. Pitcher Jordan Romano was called up from Triple-A Buffalo in a corresponding move. Giles hadn't pitched since June 5. The hard-throwing right-hander has a 1.08 ERA and has converted 11 of his 12 save chances in 25 innings with 42 strikeouts and seven walks. He could be a valuable trade chip at the deadline this summer for a team expected to be sellers. Manager Charlie Montoyo said he doesn't expect Giles to be out longer than the 10 days on the IL. Daniel Hudson picked up a very shaky save against the Orioles on Wednesday, but we'd still prefer Biagini if you're desperate for saves in deeper leagues in the short term.
