Gigantes Take Two-Way Star Casey Schmitt In Second Round
4 years agoThe San Francisco Giants selected San Diego State third baseman Casey Schmitt with the 49th overall pick in the second round in the 2020 MLB draft on Thursday. Schmitt is one of the top two-way players at the college level in 2020 as a power-hitting corner infielder/reliever. He racked up 17 saves with a fastball/splitter combination his first two years as the team's closer. The right-hander has a clean and easy delivery with a mid-90s fastball. Schmitt's raw power is his best tool at the plate, evidenced by his five home runs in the Cape Cod League. Because of his big arm, he fits nicely at third base. Some scouts see more upside with his bat than his arm, but Schmitt could move faster through the minors as a reliever.
