Diamondbacks Agree With Joakim Soria
4 years agoThe Arizona Diamondbacks signed free-agent relief pitcher Joakim Soria to a one-year, $3.5 million deal on Wednesday. The deal includes $500,000 in incentives. The 36-year-old veteran could be a strong candidate to close out games in the ninth inning for the Snakes in 2021 with no set closer currently on the roster. Soria has 223 saves during his 13-year career, including two last season with the A's. The two-time All-Star has a 3.01 ERA over 725 2/3 career innings and posted a nice 2.82 ERA with 24 strikeouts in 22 1/3 innings with Oakland in the shortened 2020 season. Soria's primary competition at the back end of the bullpen in the desert will be right-hander Stefan Crichton. If the veteran righty earns the closing gig for Arizona, he'll be a low-end closing option for those scraping for saves at the end of deep mixed drafts.
