Craig Counsell Not Committing To Any Bullpen Roles
8 months agoChicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell isn't committing to a specific closer to open his first season with the club in 2024. There are high-leverage arms in Chicago's bullpen, but Counsell isn't ready to give out defined roles this spring among names like Adbert Alzolay, Julian Merryweather, Mark Leiter Jr. and Hector Neris. The best bet for both the Cubs and fantasy managers to serve as the primary closer in 2024 is Alzolay, who posted a strong 2.67 ERA (3.02 FIP), a 1.12 WHIP, a career-high 22 saves, 13 walks and 67 strikeouts in 64 innings out of the bullpen in 2023 in his fifth season with the Cubbies. However, he'll more be more of a No. 2 closer in fantasy with Counsell having other options late in games that he can be flexible with.
