Collin McHugh Has Chance To Re-Enter Rotation In 2019
6 years agoHouston Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow said that starting pitcher Lance McCullers Jr.'s (elbow) Tommy John surgery "increases the odds" that Collin McHugh returns to the starting rotation next year. Houston's rotation was stacked in 2018 after they acquired Gerrit Cole, but both Dallas Keuchel and Charlie Morton seem likely to depart in free agency, which would open up several spots in the rotation. McHugh was excellent in a relief role this year, going 6-2 with a 1.99 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 94 strikeouts in 72 1/3 innings. His 11.7 K/9 was a career high. That'll undoubtedly come down if he moves back into a starting role, but McHugh is a sleeper candidate for next year. He won 19 games for the 'Stros in 2015.
