Carlos Martinez Won't Be Built Up To Start
5 years agoSt. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Shildt said that relief pitcher Carlos Martinez won't be built back up as a starter despite Martinez's hope that he could return to the rotation after the All-Star break. Shildt isn't ruling out Martinez starting again at some point, but it doesn't look to be anywhere on the horizon. Because of shoulder issues the last couple seasons, Martinez has had to revert to a bullpen role where he has very limited fantasy appeal. The 27-year-old is 1-0 with a 3.38 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 12 K's in 13 1/3 innings over 12 appearances this year in relief. He also has two saves, but Jordan Hicks remains the team's primary ninth-inning arm.
