Carlos Martinez Is The New Closer
6 years agoSt. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Carlos Martinez, who saved his second game of the week against the Tigers on Sunday, has been named the permanent closer by manager Mike Shildt. Bud Norris will move to another role in the back end of the bullpen. Norris loses the job after suffering two losses in his last three outings. The former closer said he is still being bothered by a hip issue. “It’s been bothering me for three months,” said Norris. “But that’s not an excuse why I didn’t get out of the last three games." Martinez was inconsistent as a rotation option due to multiple injuries this year, but he's since taken to his bullpen role and run with it. He needs to be owned in all formats, while Norris can be dropped now.
