Carlos Martinez Could Pitch In Relief Role
4 years agoSt. Louis Cardinals pitcher Carlos Martinez, who was cleared to take part in summer camp on Tuesday, looks likely to pitch out of the bullpen in 2020. Martinez took his COVID-19 test on Friday but didn't have the results needed to participate until Tuesday. The veteran right-hander spent all winter and this spring trying to return to the starting rotation, and manager Mike Shildt said Martinez "more than earned the opportunity with what he showed in spring training." But the shortened season in 2020 could cause St. Louis to go in another direction. Martinez won't face hitters until Thursday at the earliest, which means he won't have all that much time to build up as a starter. If he's used in the bullpen, it will mean that Kwan-Hyun Kim will win the fifth rotation spot. Either way the Cardinals go, C-Mart figures to be an attractive fantasy option during the shortened season.
