Brandon Kintzler Signs With Phillies
4 years agoThe Philadelphia Phillies signed free-agent relief pitcher Brandon Kintzler to a minor league deal on Wednesday, according to a source. It's a one-year deal for $3 million if Kintzler makes the team out of spring training, plus incentives. Kintzler turned down a major league offer to return to the Miami Marlins, but he can make more in Philly if he makes the team. The 36-year-old had his $4 million option declined by the Fish despite the fact that he was their best reliever in the 2020 season with a 2.22 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 12 saves in 24 1/3 innings. He was also great with the Cubs in 2019, posting a 2.68 ERA and 1.01 WHIP with one save in 57 innings. Kintzler doesn't have typical high-leverage stuff -- just a 6.3 career K/9 -- but he's been effective with a 3.31 ERA in 11 big-league seasons and should have a good chance to secure a bullpen spot in a setup role ahead of co-closers Hector Neris and Archie Bradley.
