Astros Sign Ryne Stanek On Thursday
4 years agoThe Houston Astros signed veteran reliever Ryne Stanek to a one-year deal worth $1.1 million on Thursday, according to a source. The 29-year-old was used as an opener by the Rays in 2018-19 and made 56 starts, none of which lasted more than two innings. Stanek allowed eight runs in 10 relief innings for the Marlins in 2020 after battling COVID-19 during the summer. With relievers Roberto Osuna, Chris Devenski and Brad Peacock all leaving via free agency, Stanek will help boost Houston's bullpen in the back end. He features a fastball that averages 97.7 mph and will join Ryan Pressly, Joe Smith, Brooks Raley, Blake Taylor and Enoli Paredes. Stanek plans to be in the mix for a leverage role with the Astros. It could mean some saves, but unless he becomes the everyday ninth-inning option, the 29-year-old is unlikely to have a ton of fantasy appeal.
