Antonio Gates Optimistic Of Playing In Week 1
6 years agoLos Angeles Chargers tight end Antonio Gates looked like his old self while running routes and catching passes from quarterback Philip Rivers in practice on Wednesday, and the veteran tight end is optimistic he'll be ready for Week 1 against the Chiefs. The 38-year-old wasn't listed on the injury report on Wednesday, which is a good sign. "I'm going to watch him closely this week," head coach Anthony Lynn said. "I want to know where he is conditioning-wise. We know that he can help us. That's why we brought him back. I don't know how much yet, but we'll see." While Gates may not be much of a fantasy option in Week 1, he could eventually carve out a role as a red-zone and third-down threat if he proves healthy. Gates is worth a flier as a touchdown-dependent TE2.
