Anthony Rendon Not Putting Deadline On Extension Talks
6 years agoWashington Nationals third baseman Anthony Rendon, who is in the final year of his current deal in 2019, isn't putting a firm deadline on contract-extension talks. The Nationals expect talks to resume this spring once Bryce Harper's free agency is resolved. "We can talk as much you want, I’m all ears," Rendon said. "I’m a great listener. But it's not going to distract me. At least, I say it won't. And if it does become an issue, then I'll address it. But thus far, it's been all right." Rendon, who will turn 29 in June, would be one of the prizes of free agency if he reaches the open market. He is excellent on both sides of the ball and was worth 6.3 wins above replacement last year while hitting .308/.374/.535 with 24 home runs. Rendon isn't expected to give the Nats a hometown discount, though, as he's seeking a contract in the range of Astros second baseman Jose Altuve, who signed a five-year, $151 million extension last year. He's a fine consolation prize in the early rounds of drafts once the elite names come off the board.
