Anthony Bass The Early Front-Runner For Saves
4 years agoMiami Marlins manager Don Mattingly went to relief pitcher Anthony Bass often when discussing the team's closer role on Wednesday, according to Craig Mish of the Miami Herald. The ninth inning would seem to be an open competition after Brandon Kintzler did not re-sign with the Marlins, but Mattingly is already favoring Bass before even seeing him in a Marlins uniform. Bass saved seven games for Toronto last season, posting a 3.51 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP with 21 strikeouts in just under 26 innings. He'll be worth a spot on every mixed league roster if he does get the ninth to himself, but he won't be near the top tier of relievers in any format since he's unlikely to have a long leash. Yimi Garcia is probably next in line, with Dylan Floro and Richard Bleier also being options for the closer's role.
