Andres Munoz Undergoes Tommy John Surgery
5 years agoSan Diego Padres reliever Andres Munoz (elbow) underwent Tommy John surgery on Friday. Without daily news flow, this development comes as a surprise, but Munoz had encountered discomfort earlier in spring training. The 21-year-old debuted last season to a 3.91 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 31 percent strikeout rate in 23 frames while averaging a whopping 100.2 MPH on his heater. He was expected to be a key setup man in 2020 prior to the surgery. With the season start date in doubt, it makes sense for Munoz to get a head start on his recovery. Fantasy drafters counting on him for strikeouts will need to wait until the middle of next year. Munoz’s absence gives a bump to fellow reliever Emilio Pagan, who’s now the primary handcuff to closer Kirby Yates.
