49ers, Trent Williams Not Rushing Extension
5 years agoThe San Francisco 49ers traded a 2020 fifth-round pick and a 2021 third-round pick to the Washington Redskins on Saturday to acquire Pro Bowl left tackle Trent Williams, but neither side is in a rush to work out a contract extension. As of now, Williams is expected to play out the final year of his current contract in 2020, which will pay him $12.5 million. It's mainly because it's been 482 days since Williams last played in an NFL game after sitting out all last season. General manager John Lynch made it sound like the Niners want to get a look at Williams in person before starting the whole extension process. With Joe Staley retiring, Williams should step in immediately as quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo's blind-side protector.
