ANALYSIS: Candelario's first full season in Detroit in 2018 was both promising and disappointing. He slashed .224/.317/.393 with 19 home runs, 78 runs scored and 54 RBI in 144 games. The young third baseman got off to a hot start, but wrist issues plagued him for the rest of the season and he never recovered. Despite being a good contact guy in the minors, Candelario struck out 26 percent of the time last year. He's fanned 35.3 percent of the time in eight games this year, so he'll need to put the bat on the ball more often if he's to take the next step in 2019.
The good news is that Candelario is only 25 years old and has the skills to hit 25-plus home runs and improve his average drastically from a year ago if everything goes his way. Improving against right-handed pitchers will be key, as the switch-hitter batted only .199 against them with 119 strikeouts in 391 at-bats. He's also entrenched at third base and should hit in the middle of the lineup all season, albeit in a lineup without much thump around him. There's a lot of untapped potential here.
