Marlins starting pitcher Jarred Cosart is under investigation by MLB for alleged gambling activities, according to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.
Cosart, who was acquired from the Houston Astros last July, has found himself in hot water with MLB investigators because of messages exchanged with a “gambling authority” on Twitter.
Crasnick says it is unclear whether it is thought that Cosart has been betting on baseball or other sports. Major League Baseball prohibits betting on baseball, but wagers on other sports are allowed.
This investigation comes shortly after Pete Rose requested his lifetime ban from baseball be lifted. There has been no word yet from Commissioner Rob Manfred as to whether Rose’s request would be heeded. Rose was banned for life for gambling on baseball. Rose, the all-time MLB hits leader, is not in the Hall of Fame.
Meanwhile, Cosart has told the media that he is fully cooperating with MLB investigators. The Marlins have offered no comment.
Cosart, 24, figures to be the number three starter for the Marlins behind Mat Latos and Henderson Alvarez. The Texas native has put together an impressive first two seasons in the big leagues with Houston and Miami, posting an ERA of 3.26 in 240.1 innings.
