Angel’s manager Mike Scioscia confirmed that starting pitcher Garrett Richards won’t be ready for Opening Day after having surgery on his knee in August.
Last season, Richards suffered a torn tendon in his knee after covering first in the Angels’ August 20th game against Boston. After having the procedure Richards was expected to be ready for Opening Day this year, but the Angels’ staff doesn't want to rush the healing process.
The 26 year-old had a breakout season in 2014. His 2.61 ERA was good for 10th in all of baseball, and he lead a strong Angels rotation after posting a 4.16 and 4.69 ERA in his previous seasons.
If Richards can follow up his strong 2014 with a similar 2015 season, then the Angels will be AL West favorites. Their strong rotation with Richards, Jered Weaver, C.J. Wilson, and Matt Shoemaker is expected to be an above average rotation with the potential to repeat in a strong AL West division.
