BALLER MOVE: Target Around ~70-80 Overall
CURRENT ADP: ~130
ANALYSIS: Washington Football Team rookie running back Antonio Gibson, who stood out in training camp, should be the biggest beneficiary of Adrian Peterson's release. The third-round draft pick is a pass-catching threat and is an excellent fit for the offense, according to Peterson himself. Washington also has Bryce Love and Peyton Barber for early down snaps and J.D. McKissic as another pass-catching option.
Love is more of a traditional running back - Gibson had just 33 carries in his college career - but Gibson will be involved plenty, especially in the passing game. In fact, his new head coach Ron Rivera has already compared Gibson to another player he coached with the Panthers, Christian McCaffrey. While it would be unfair to expect Gibson to perform like the All-Pro, Rivera's experience with McCaffrey should help him maximize Gibson's unique talents.
The Washington Football Team used the 66th pick in the draft on Gibson, one of the most electrifying players available in the draft. The speedy Gibson played wide receiver at Memphis, so he'll face a bit of a learning curve playing running back in the NFL, though reports out of Washington camp have been positive. Last season in college, Gibson scored eight receiving touchdowns and four rushing touchdowns while averaging over 19.3 yards per catch. His 4.39-second 40-yard dash time makes him a home-run threat every time he touches the ball so he should get plenty of opportunities in an offense that lacks many playmakers.
Even before AD's release, the rookie had been rising up draft boards, so Gibson is firmly on the fantasy radar now. Gibson's average draft position has now skyrocketed since Peterson's release, but if he's available at ~pick 70 he should be considered as a high-upside draft value pick in fantasy football drafts. Especially in PPR leagues with a much more concrete role in the offense, the 22-year-old is firmly in the RB3/flex mix now.
