Yoan Moncada 2021 Player Outlook: Power Outage And Shortage Of Steals Killing Fantasy Value
3 years agoChicago White Sox third baseman Yoan Moncada produced mixed results during 144 games in 2021. Although he walked 13.6% of the time, got on base at a .375 clip, and scored 74 runs, he went deep just 14 times, hit .263, and stole just three bases, along with a disappointing 61 RBI. After smashing 25 HRs during a breakout 2019 season, in which he posted an elite 12.2 Barrel%, Moncada's barrel rate dipped to 6.2% in 2020, followed by an 8.2% mark last season. His 13% HR/FB in 2021 implies he didn't have much bad luck, and his below-average 20.3 FB% isn't a good sign of more home runs to come. Moncada hit .315 in 2019, but his average exit velocity was 93.1 MPH, compared to 90.1 MPH last season. His 2021 25.5 K% doesn't help in that area, and the 26-year-old's .350 BABIP gives reason to believe his batting average will take a hit if he can't start annihilating the ball again. Even though his sprint speed is still in the 67th percentile, he's swiped just three bases his past 196 games, implying his days of 10-plus steals are over. Moncada's excellent on-base ability will provide fantasy managers with enough runs, but without extra-base power, his RBI total will be suboptimal. His current ADP of 142 isn't ideal, and drafters are better off waiting for Justin Turner at pick 154.
