Luis Garcia 2022 Player Outlook: A Young, Talented Arm With A Deep Arsenal
3 years agoGarcia was one of the most valuable fantasy players in the league last year after going undrafted as he had no expected role in the Astros rotation prior to the season. He went on to throw 155.1 innings, winning 11 games with a 3.48 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP. His 26.4% K% and 7.9% BB% marks were far from elite, but both beat the league averages. There is a lot of room for that strikeout rate to grow given the incredibly strong 13.7% swinging-strike rate he posted (10th best among qualified starters). He was also a guy that was tinkering throughout the year, upping his cutter usage and adding a sinker mid-season after he was really struggling with left-handed batters. His cutter ended up as a great pitch with a 23.2% SwStr% and a 30.7% CSW%. He also posted strong metrics on the splitter, slider, and changeup. A deep arsenal and ability to adjust led to great results at the end of the year. Garcia has a locked-in spot in the Astros' 2022 rotation. With all of the positives we saw in 2021 and the fact that he is just 25 years old, there are a lot of paths to Garcia crushing his ADP (about 150) once again in 2022.
