Starling Marte 2022 Outlook: A New Team With Some Slight Regression
3 years agoNew York Mets outfielder Starling Marte is coming off a solid 2021 where he posted .310/.383/.458 over 526 plate appearances between Oakland and Miami. He led all of MLB in stolen bases with 47 while belting 12 home runs with 55 RBI, and 89 runs scored. Marte's 2021 metrics supported his production and were consistent with career figures. His sprint speed was 28.4 ft/sec, only slightly down from his 28.5 ft/sec posted in 2020, and his overall plate discipline remained consistent with career numbers in 2021, though a 30.1% chase rate did help to support the highest seasonal walk total (43) and on-base percentage of his career. Notably, Marte posted a BABIP of .372 in 2021, which, when taken together with an xBA of .277, suggests some regression in batting average. Looking ahead to 2022, the 33-year old is likely to see a slight regression in steals due to age, despite the fact that the Mets will give Marte a permanent green light to steal. Marte may also see some slight regression in batting average and OBP given underlying metrics. The move to Citifield from the Oakland Colosseum should not impact overall power numbers and his RBI production should also remain consistent with 2021 totals since he will again bat leadoff. Marte could see a bump in run totals with a more formidable lineup hitting behind him in New York. This is especially true if shortstop Francisco Lindor has an expected bounce-back campaign. With a current ADP of 28, Marte is a safe second-round pick who can provide solid production in all five hitting categories. A 20-30 season to go with a .270 average, .330 OBP, 50-60 RBI, and 90-100 runs scored is not out of the question in 2022.
