Brandon Woodruff 2022 Player Outlook: A Rock Solid Arm With Room To Improve
3 years agoThe Brewers tall righty posted another elite fantasy season in 2021, and it seemed to fly a little bit under the radar. Overshadowed by teammate Corbin Burnes, Brandon Woodruff went on to throw 179 innings and post a 2.56 ERA, a 0.97 WHIP, a 29.8% K%, and a 6.1% BB%. Those numbers are sparkling. This was nothing new either for Woody, as it was his third-straight season with a K% above 28% and a walk rate below 7%, something only Jacob deGrom has done with him. Woodruff makes his money with his elite pairing of fastballs, a four-seam and a sinker. In 2021, he posted an elite 14.7% SwStr% with the four-seamer, and an elite 56.8% GB% with the sinker. Those two offerings work amazingly well together and are complemented even more by improvements he has made with his curveball (31.9% CSW%) and changeup (21.5% SwStr%). It is a brilliant collection of pitches he possesses, and at the age of just 28, there is even more room to grow and improve for the big man. Few pitchers have been as consistent and convincing as Woodruff over the last three seasons, making him a spectacular option to anchor your group of pitchers with. The price has finally caught up (ADP of 17), however, as Woodruff is being drafted as a top-five pitcher quite often. With how volatile the position can be, you should feel just fine paying that price in the second or third round.
