Giants Decline Johnny Cueto's Option
3 years agoThe San Francisco Giants declined starting pitcher Johnny Cueto's $22 million option for the 2022 season on Friday, making him a free agent. Instead, the veteran right-hander will receive a $5 million buyout. As he nears the back end of his career, Cueto has become a back-of-the-rotation starter after missing most of the 2018 and 2019 seasons due to an elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery. The 35-year-old has posted a 4.55 ERA and a 4.26 FIP in 178 innings since the beginning of last year, and he's striking out fewer hitters (20.1% strikeout rate). At this point, he's mostly attractive as an innings-eater to MLB clubs if he can stay healthy, and there just isn't a whole lot of fantasy upside left.
