Tucker Barnhart Traded To The Tigers
3 years agoThe Detroit Tigers acquired catcher Tucker Barnhart from the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday in exchange for infield prospect Nick Quintana, according to sources. The Gold Glove catcher will fill a key area of need for the Tigers in 2022. Jake Rogers (elbow) is expected to miss most of next year following Tommy John surgery, and Eric Haase struggled down the stretch with regular playing time. The Reds made the move with 2015 first-round pick Tyler Stephenson set to be Cincy's catcher of the future. Detroit will pick up Barnhart's $7.5 million option for the 2022 season after he hit .247/.317/.368 in 388 plate appearances (97 starts) for the Reds. He'll provide a nice complement to Haase from the left side of the plate, but his strength remains his defense and pitch-calling. Quintana was a second-round pick in 2019 but hasn't moved past the Low-A level, mostly due to injuries.
