Brian Hoyer Promoted From Practice Squad
3 years agoThe New England Patriots signed quarterback Brian Hoyer to a one-year deal on Saturday that promotes him from the practice squad to the active roster, according to a source. Jarrett Stidham (back) is out through at least Week 6 with an injury, so the veteran Hoyer should serve as rookie Mac Jones' backup under center for the foreseeable future. The 35-year-old signal-caller is in his 12th season in the NFL, and he's spent six of those years with the Patriots. Hoyer knows Bill Belichick's system well and is merely veteran insurance at the position behind the youngster. If he's forced into action at any point this season, it would be bad news for the Patriots offense as a whole.
