CAM AKERS 2021 OUTLOOK: OUT FOR THE SEASON WITH A TORN ACHILLES
3 years agoUPDATE: Sadly Cam Akers is out for the year after tearing his Achilles prior to training camp. Because of that, he should not be drafted except in dynasty leagues, but you can read below for what could have been for 2021. Meanwhile, Darrell Henderson takes over as the lead dog in the Rams' backfield, while newly-acquired Sony Michel should also get his fair share of touches.
PRIOR TO THE INJURY: Los Angeles Rams second-year running back Cam Akers barely saw the field last season before the teams' Bye in Week 10. Then in Week 13, he was handed the keys to the kingdom. Sean McVay gave Akers a workhorse role down the stretch. He averaged 21.5 carries and 2.8 targets per game while playing on 67% of the snaps in four games between Weeks 13 and 17. Not only has McVay talked about Akers as an "every-down-back" heading into his sophomore campaign, but he's also shown a willingness to feed one guy. Recall Todd Gurley was the overall RB1 and overall RB3 respectively in McVay's first two years in Los Angeles. What's more, veteran RB Malcolm Brown and his 101 carries and 33 targets are now in Miami and the Rams replaced him with 7th-round RB Jake Funk in the 2021 NFL Draft. Darrell Henderson is still there, but McVay has shown little to no interest in sticking with Henderson as the main back. This is Cam Akers' backfield. With Matthew Stafford providing an upgrade to the offense as a whole, Akers has a good chance to become a top-10 running back in 2021.
