One and Done Selections - 3M Open
Joe Nicely - Matthew Wolff
Alternate - Bo Hoag
With the year’s final major championship now in the books, there’s a noticeable shifting of gears in the PGA Tour season. The most obvious note? It’s winding down. That means for those of us who are trailing in OAD contests it’s time to get aggressive.
Just the mention of aggressive conjures pictures of Matt Wolff in my head. For all of his off-the-course issues this year, Wolff reminded us just how explosive he can be during his return to golf in the U.S. Open, racking up an astounding total of 17 birdies or better at Torrey Pines. That ability to go low has served him well at the 3M Open, as Wolff captured his first professional victory at TPC Twin Cities in 2019 and followed up with a T12 in last year’s 3M. While this selection certainly comes with a level of volatility, at this point in the year, conservative picks are a luxury I can no longer afford.

Spencer Aguiar - Matthew Wolff
Alternate - Keegan Bradley
The fans have spoken, and Matthew Wolff won my Twitter poll to decide my selection for the 3M Open. Now, the route I went this week isn't as random as it might seem since I narrowed down the choices to just Wolff or Keegan Bradley, but I want to explain my reasoning for why I ended up with those two options.
For starters, the event features one of the smaller first-place prizes of the season, which means some level of consistency from my golfer should be thrown out the window. That made selections like Sergio Garcia or Bubba Watson a little less appealing than they might have otherwise been if I were trying to pinpoint any semblance of safety here, but I think the best route for any person (including those behind or in front of their leagues) is to shoot for the moon and try to land as much upside as possible for this tournament.
Wolff has been dealing with some off-the-course issues, which ultimately made me hesitant in placing an outright wager on him at odds of 30/1, but my upside model loves the potential that the young American brings to the game if everything is ok. We have seen him have past success at multiple TPC properties, including a victory here in 2019 and a 12th place showing in 2020, and all of that data can be metrically displayed when we look at the 22-year-old ranking third in my volatile model and fifth at TPC courses. I view this event as a boom-or-bust paradise, and I like the idea of either Wolff or Bradley as my choice. I will be using both in the big OAD contest sponsored by the SBFFC, but we will roll with the Twitter poll and go with Wolff in this variation.
Yearly Earnings - $9,075,910
Yearly Cuts Made - 25/29
Josh Bennett - Hank Lebioda
Alternate - Cameron Davis
Yearly Earnings - $4,497,058
Yearly Cuts Made - 22/29
Andrew Putters - Matthew Wolff
Alternate - Bubba Watson
There are a couple of reasons I am going with Mr. Wolff this week. First, strictly on course history alone, he is a former winner in this tournament’s young history. Secondly, he chose to stay home during The Open Championship and should be well-rested. Some of the players that have chosen to play in both have to be experiencing some fatigue.
