David Johnson 2021 Outlook: One Last Ride
4 years agoIt's been a long time since we've seen the elite version of David Johnson. As his historic 2016 fantasy campaign fades further into the distance, managers are stuck asking what to do with the 29-year-old back. Although it is often overlooked, Johnson was the RB16 in points per game (ppg) last season. The key to his fantasy success was his consistency. Johnson only had one game under double-digit fantasy points, averaged 4.7 yards per carry, and found paydirt eight times in his 11 games. He did all of this despite Houston's horrific offensive line. Say what you will, but Johnson was one of the steadiest RB2s in the league. Moving into the 2021 season, the Texans are widely considered the worst team in the NFL and Johnson's situation appears to be less than ideal with the uncertainty surrounding Deshaun Watson and the additions of Mark Ingram, Phillip Lindsay, and Rex Burkhead. What gives Johnson managers hope, however, is his strong finish to 2020. Over the last three games of the season, Johnson was the RB5 in ppg, averaging 23.1 fantasy points. He also demonstrated that he still has some gas in the tank, with two of his last three games containing monstrous receiving and rushing stat lines (Week 15, 11rec for 106 yards; Week 16, 12 attempts for 128 yards and 1 touchdown). While the team has added the aforementioned competition, and will likely have fewer scoring opportunities, Johnson should lead the backfield in touches and targets. Currently, he is being drafted at the beginning of the seventh round, where he is a great value as an RB3 or Flex option.
