D'Andre Swift 2021 Outlook: Tremendous Upside, Uncertain Role
4 years agoBeyond the top 10-12 running backs selected in fantasy drafts lie those with tangible upside that scream "league winner" but also carry a degree of risk that causes them to fall to the second or third round. D'Andre Swift is one such RB that could see his draft slot fluctuate quite a bit from league to league. As a second-round pick and one of the top backs drafted in 2020 out of Georgia, he was expected to be an instant impact-maker. On the contrary, he only had one 100-yard rushing game and two games with more than 100 scrimmage yards. He averaged 67.5 yards and scored eight times in 13 games, missing three due to a concussion. He flashed his talent with breakaway speed and a nose for the end zone but was underutilized by head coach Matt Patricia who was finally fired after three failing seasons in Detroit. A new coach and the departure of Matthew Stafford could mean more touches for Swift and a rise to fantasy prominence. It should be noted that the Lions also added Jamaal Williams in free agency, Jermar Jefferson in the draft, and have had conversations with Todd Gurley. Although these could be viewed as ways to add depth behind Swift, Williams ate into Aaron Jones' touches throughout his tenure in Green Bay and a player of Gurley's ilk isn't likely to be signed in order to simply sit on the bench, at the very least playing the role of goal-line vulture. Swift will have his moments but the Lions aren't likely to be a high-scoring offense and his touches aren't totally secure. Swift is best left for the latter portion of the third round in 12-team drafts as a risky RB2.
