Adam Thielen 2021 Outlook: Passing The Torch Yet Still Scoring Touchdowns
4 years agoMinnesota made a bold move when it traded Stefon Diggs to the Buffalo Bills for multiple draft choices and selected LSU standout Justin Jefferson in the first round of the 2020 draft. While Diggs led the NFL in receiving yards, Jefferson broke the longstanding rookie receiving yards record (in the Super Bowl era) with 1,400 yards. But if you thought that meant teammate Adam Thielen was left out in the fantasy cold, you would be more mistaken than those who thought Tom Brady could not win a Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Despite Jefferson's breakout campaign, Thielen hauled in a career-high 14 touchdowns after never having double-digit scores in his prior six seasons. The good news is Thielen cannot be double-covered on a regular basis by opposing defenses due to Jefferson's game-breaking abilities. Thielen is also clearly Kirk Cousins' favorite red-zone target. The bad news is Jefferson is only going to get better and will likely garner 20-30 more targets than Thielen this season. Over the final month of 2020, Thielen averaged just 51 receiving yards per game, while Jefferson averaged 90 receiving yards per game. Thielen is also turning 31 before Week 1, so there's always a risk he could begin to lose a step. Nevertheless, Thielen is a top-15 WR who should be drafted within the first 50-60 picks since he could have 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns this year, but do not be surprised if his fantasy value drops and Jefferson's soars, either.
