Henry Ruggs 2021 Outlook: Unlikely to Improve on Poor Rookie Season
4 years agoDo you know what Henry Ruggs' breakout age is? You don't. Because he doesn't have one. Ruggs spent three years at Alabama as, at best, the third best wide receiver on his team. The Raiders made him the first WR off the board in the 2020 NFL draft because they are run by two completely incompetent NFL minds in Jon Gruden and Mike Mayock. These guys have not a clue about how to evaluate or run a football team. Volume is king in fantasy football and targets are a skill statistic. Ruggs played on 68% of his team's offensive snaps as a rookie, but commanded a pathetic 10.3% target share. Darren Waller is entrenched as the clear primary option for Derek Carr, but beyond that, this is a wide open depth chart. The Raiders did bring in John Brown, who projects lead non-Waller Raiders in targets. After him, it's just a medley of replacement level guys such as Hunter Renfrow, Zay Jones, and Willie Snead. Both Ruggs and fellow sophomore Bryan Edwards should be able to outshine them all. The question is can they? If rookie production is any indication, the talent just isn't there. Ruggs' price is currently free, so I won't fault you for taking a shot at a guy that comes with elite speed and draft capital, but I'd bet against Ruggs being anything more than a random sporadic splash play.
