Shohei Ohtani Shows Diminished Velocity Wednesday
4 years agoLos Angeles Angels starting pitcher Shohei Ohtani showed reduced velocity in his start against the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday, but he still threw 4 2/3 solid innings in a no-decision. Ohtani said after the 3-2 loss that he is not injured. The Japanese two-way start averaged 91.3 mph on his fastball, which was down around five mph from his season average. His splitter averaged 82.7 mph, down nearly seven mph from his season average. Ohtani allowed two runs on five hits while walking two and striking out five. "He just didn't have it," manager Joe Maddon said. "He just wasn't feeling his fastball." Despite the so-so outing, it was the second straight start in which saw action in the outfield in order to keep his bat in the lineup. Ohtani went 1-for-3 with a bunt single against the shift at the plate. He now has a 2.37 ERA with 45 strikeouts, 22 walks and three homers allowed in 30 1/3 innings over six starts. Fantasy managers will be interested to see how Ohtani bounces back after this very average outing.
