John Lynch To Defer To Kyle Shanahan On QB Decision
4 years agoThe San Francisco 49ers have narrowed their options with the No. 3 overall pick in the first round of Thursday's NFL draft to Alabama quarterback Mac Jones and North Dakota State signal-caller Trey Lance. They are still comfortable with five QBs at No. 3 -- Ohio State's Justin Fields, Clemson's Trevor Lawrence, BYU's Zach Wilson, Jones and Lance. Lawrence and Wilson are expected to go first and second, respectively. Lynch said that he is collaborating with and ceding final say to Shanahan on the final QB decision. That deferral by Lynch could mean that the Niners are leaning toward Jones. "Do we know exactly who we want?" Shanahan asked rhetorically at one point. "Maybe, probably, maybe not." Shanahan also wouldn't officially guarantee that Jimmy Garoppolo would be on the roster this Sunday, and the expected 2021 starter could be trade bait this weekend. On the other hand, Shanahan said they feel "very fortunate" to have Garoppolo on the roster with a rookie incoming.
