Shohei Ohtani Plays Left Field Saturday
4 years agoLos Angeles Angels designated hitter/starting pitcher Shohei Ohtani played left field on Saturday in the 16-2 blowout loss to the Houston Astros, the first time he has played a defensive position other than pitcher in the big leagues. Ohtani, who had homered in the third inning, came in to play left field in the eighth inning. Manager Joe Maddon said the defensive move was not a sign of things to come, so fantasy managers shouldn't expect Ohtani to gain outfield eligibility anytime soon. "That was an emergency [move], but I can see him anywhere on the field," Maddon said. "The guy is such a great athlete. That was out of necessity today, but that's not part of the plans, but I'm telling you he could do it."
