Rays Preparing Chris Archer To Pitch After Opener
4 years agoTampa Bay Rays pitcher Chris Archer has appeared in 212 MLB games over his eight-year career. He's started 210 of those games. This year, Archer appears to be primed for a different role. This offseason, the 32-year-old Archer signed a one-year deal to return to Tampa Bay, where he spent his prime pitching years. Rays manager Kevin Cash told the press that the team is grooming Archer for a long relief role. Cash envisions him pitching out of the bullpen behind an opener this year. On Friday, Archer will pitch in relief behind starter Rich Hill in a spring game against the Boston Red Sox. Archer hasn't pitched in the Majors since August 2019. He underwent surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome in 2020 and is currently on an innings limit. He's only pitched 1 1/3 innings this spring so far.
