Mike Mayers 2021 Fantasy Outlook: High-Strikeout Reliever With Some Regression Looming
4 years agoLos Angeles Angels relief pitcher Mike Mayers turned in a strong performance in 2020. It was backed up by a 16% swinging-strike rate and an elite 36% strikeout rate. The change in scenery from St. Louis to Los Angeles did him well. But you should expect some regression in 2021. With a .242 BABIP and a fortunate 6% HR/FB rate in the shortened 2020 season, coupled with just a 33% ground-ball rate, his ERA is primed for negative regression. If you are looking for a middle reliever in 2021 with a high strikeout rate, Mayers might be your man. But don't expect the thrilling ~2.00 ERA and sub-1.00 WHIP to occur once again. Mayers is unlikely to see many save chances behind closer Raisel Iglesias, either.
