Marcus Semien Agrees With Blue Jays
4 years agoThe Toronto Blue Jays agreed to a one-year, $18 million deal on Tuesday with free-agent shortstop Marcus Semien, according to a source familiar with the deal. Semien has played shortstop exclusively for the A's since 2015, but the initial expectation is that he will slide over to second base in Toronto, a position he last played in 2014 with the White Sox. It means that Cavan Biggio could see time at the hot corner or serve in a super-utility role. Toronto already has young star Bo Bichette at shortstop. The 30-year-old Semien hit .285 with 33 home runs and an .892 OPS in 2019, finishing third in American League MVP voting. But he had a weak .679 OPS in 2020. In a much better hitting environment in what is now a stacked lineup in Toronto, Semien is an excellent bounce-back candidate that will also gain second-base eligibility for fantasy managers.
