4 years agoAs the years have gone on, Mark Canha has developed into quite a good player. The peak of his performance came in the 2019 season, where everything seemed to click, and he ended up with a whopping 146 wRC+ in 126 games. Canha's power had quietly been developing in that span, and in 2019 he set new career highs in barrel (9.5%) and hard-hit rate (41.1%) en route to his power increase. He also developed into something of a walk machine, with a 13.5% walk rate, among the best in the game. Fast forward to 2020 and Canha was still an on-base machine, but the encouraging power output from the prior season was nearly gone. Things still look similar in the hard hit department (39.4%), and his groundball rate was even lower than 2019 (33.8% vs. 41%), so his power struggles don't appear to be a result of regression in those two areas. Rather, it appears that Canha wasn't hitting his fly balls and line-drives as well as previously. He lost two miles-per-hour on those batted-ball types from 2019 to 2020, as well as 13 feet of fly ball distance on average, which likely impacted his power output. Overall, Canha still has a very good eye at the plate, and he has one of the lowest chase rates in the game, so he should still be excellent in that department going forward, but for him to have mainstream fantasy appeal, he'll need to recuperate some of that lost power from the 2019 season.--mwallach
