Randy Arozarena 2021 Outlook: ADP Already Out of Control Despite Breakout Potential
4 years agoTampa Bay Rays outfielder Randy Arozarena went from afterthought to postseason hero to phenom in a matter of weeks. The 25-year-old Cuban prospect spent much of the 2020 regular season rehabbing and recovering from COVID before debuting at the very end of August. He made an immediate splash, swatting four homers, stealing two bases, and hitting .471 over his first seven MLB games. He finished the regular season with a slash line of .281/.382/.641, seven HR, 11 RBI, 15 runs, and four SB over 64 at-bats. Then, the playoffs came and we all know what happened. Arozarena went ballistic, posting all-time playoff records with 29 total hits, 10 home runs, and numerous other rookie records. Predictably, fantasy managers are ready for a breakout season and some view him as the next coming of Ronald Acuna Jr. Despite an offseason incident which saw Arozarena arrested in Mexico regarding a custody dispute, he was released without consequence. It's clear that his draft stock hasn't taken a hit and may even continue to climb if Arozarena continues to hit during spring training. His early ADP is all the way up to 58 in NFBC drafts and he may cost a top-50 pick in many leagues. While the tantalizing talent is tangible, we have an even smaller sample size than most rookies who premiered in 2020. If you prefer to shoot for the power/speed upside of Arozarena over the predictability of someone like George Springer in the same tier, be prepared to strike early enough on draft day.
