Blue Jays Discussing Jean Segura
4 years agoPhiladelphia Phillies infielder Jean Segura is drawing trade interest, and the Toronto Blue Jays are among the teams discussing him, according to sources. Segura played third and second base in 2020 after the team signed Didi Gregorius to play the 6. He has hit .276/.329/.421 with 19 home runs in 198 games the last two seasons in Philadelphia and has been traded four times since 2012. Segura will earn $14.85 million next year, another $14.85 million in 2022 and has a $17 million option for 2023. Clearing his contract could give the Phils a better chance at retaining catcher J.T. Realmuto, but they'd likely have to eat a chunk of Segura's contract in order to do so. Toronto already has Bo Bichette at shortstop and Cavan Biggio at second base, so Segura would likely be tasked with the hot corner if he were to land in Toronto, and he'd have some nice appeal in a hitter's park in an up-and-coming lineup with multi-position eligibility.
