Yankees Decline Options On Brett Gardner, J.A. Happ
4 years agoThe New York Yankees declined their 2021 options on outfielder Brett Gardner and left-handed pitcher J.A. Happ on Friday, making them both free agents. Gardner will receive a $2.5 million buyout instead of a $10 million salary, while Happ's deal didn't come with a buyout. The 37-year-old Gardner is the team's last player from the 2009 World Series champion team and has been with the Yanks since 2008. He hit .223 with five home runs and 15 RBI during the shortened season, down from his 2019 season in which he hit .251 with a career-high 28 home runs and 74 RBI. Happ, 38, was demoted from the rotation early this year and finished 2-2 with a 3.47 ERA in nine starts.
